Peripatetic low causes flooding, record rain in NT, QLD Gulf Country

The tropical low that formed north of Elcho Island near the beginning of the month, developing briefly into a cyclone at landfall on 5 January, has continued to wander around the Territory's northeast breaking rainfall records and bringing flooding. After the torrential rain reported on 9 January, it moved southeast into the SW Gulf of Carpentaria on 12 January, then prescribed a circuit of the Top End before returning to the SW Gulf today. (The low subsequently weakened and moved west across the NT into the WA Kimberley region and out to sea again, before curving back into the WA coast on 25 January causing flooding rain.)

Record rainfall in the NT has included Borroloola 179 and Bing Bong Port 169mm on the 10th, and Redbank Mine 249 and Wollogorang 167.8 on the 11th. Redbank Mine went on to set a new rainfall record for any location in any month in the NT, with a January rainfall total of 1252.1mm. Major flooding peaked in the McArthur River at McArthur River Mine today (14.1m) and at Borroloola on 16 January (14.7m) with the river reported to be 5 to 6km wide. Major flooding also occurred in the Towns and Limmen Bight caatchments to the west of the McArthur, and in the Robinson, Calvert and Settlement river basins to the east. Minor flooding has occurred in the upper Roper River and in the Hodgson River, while the Central Arnhem Road, the Carpentaria Highway from Daly Waters to Borroloola and the Tablelands Highway south to the Barkly Tablelands were all cut by floodwaters for several days.

In Queensland, daily rainfall records were set at Westmoreland Station with 240mm on the 11th and Mornington Island in the SE Gulf with 298mm on the 12th. Major flooding occurred in the Nicholson River and continued for the rest of the month, while moderate flooding occurred in the lower reaches of the adjacent Gregory River. The heavy rain stayed fairly close to the coast in Queensland, with Croydon, inland from the SE Gulf, managing its driest January in a 115-year record with a monthly total of only 49.4mm.
