Long-lived tropical low brings flood rain to northern WA

The tropical low that formed north of Arnhem Land in the NT at the beginning of January brought flood rain to WA Pilbara today. The low wandered around NE NT for nearly three weeks before moving into the WA Kimberley on 21 January, passing out to sea, then recurving to cross the coast east of Port Hedland this morning. Heavy rain occurred on the coast as the low approached, with Mandora, 240km ENE of Port Hedland, recording its heaviest one-day total in 89 years with 146mm. Rain continued as the low moved inland, with Marillana, north of Newman, recording 356.5mm over the 3 days ended Monday 27 January. The Yule River flooded cutting a number of roads including the Northwest Highway. General falls in the Pilbara of 100 to 200mm were welcomed by pastoralists.
