Heavy rain continues across central southern QLD See 10 Feb
NEWSBITS: Hot around Perth; Flooding continues in coastal QLD

Severe storms inland from Perth and Boyup Brook on the 9th caused heavy rain, strong winds and hail from New Norcia (43 mm) to Pingelly. One afternoon storm, lasting just half an hour, left a trail of damage west of York. A storm spotter at Toodyay reported hail to 3 cm diameter, flash flooding (a local farmer recorded 93 mm) and wind damage cutting a swathe of damage 500 metres wide for 5 kilometres. In fact he reported this as a tornado as he said "the damage caused could only have been done by a tornado". Wandering recorded 29 mm between 2 and 3pm. Hail to 3 cm diameter, caused damage to grapevines, and also minor property damage at Boyup Brook.

NEWSBITS

It was an unusually hot day from around Perth to the southwest Capes today. Cape Naturaliste's top of 38.4 was 12.9 above normal, while Perth Airport recorded a maximum of 42.4, 10.6 above. Perth had a particularly uncomfortable night with the thermometer sitting on 30° at 4am. A slow-moving trough off the WA coast is bringing hot, dry northeasterlies across the Southwest. Temperatures reached above 40° up most of the west coast, peaking at 45.9 at Nyang Station, in a lonely part of the West Gascoyne 250km NE of Carnarvon and 150km S of Onslow. Thunderstorms and some rain areas developed near the coast ahead of the trough this afternoon, Wandering receiving 29mm in the hour to 3pm.

Flood crests continued to move down coastal river systems in QLD. The main flood waters in the Burnett River are now downstream of Gayndah where a moderate flood peak of around 8.60 metres was recorded at 9pm Saturday. Moderate flooding was extending downstream to Walla, which peaked around 9.76m at 8.30pm. The Fitzroy River at Riverslea peaked at 17.14 metres at 9am this morning, and minor to borderline moderate flooding is extending downstream toward Rockhampton.
