Widespread rain in central and western NT
NEWSBITS: Storms bring useful falls to SW QLD; Widespread storms but not much rain in NSW

Widespread rain in central and western NT

The monsoon trough across the NT Top End has entered an active phase and moved south, bringing rain and thunderstorms well inland into the Territory's western and central parts. This morning, Elliott, 650km SSE of Darwin, reported a 24-hour fall of 129mm, while Wave Hill, 550km S of Darwin, reported 76.8mm, 70 of it falling in 12 hours to 3am. Tennant Creek Airport recorded 52mm in 6 hours to 3am for a 24-hour to 9am total of 63mm, then a further 27mm between 6 and 9pm.

On the 15th at Nyngan (Central West Plains) strong winds uprooted trees in a 5 kilometre swathe near Nyngan.

NEWSBITS

Monsoonal moisture fed south into a surface trough over SW QLD today to produce some significant falls in early evening thunderstorms. Boulia recorded 38mm between 3 and 9pm and Windorah 21mm between 6 and 9pm.

Storms fired up across the northeastern half of NSW this afternoon. The storms developed between 2 and 5pm along a line from the state's SE to NW corners in advance of a surface trough, and advanced several hundred kilometres to the NE before dying out shortly before midnight. While good windshear and instability were present, moisture levels were not great and the most significant rainfall was only 25mm at Moss Vale.
