Notes on significant weather not yet written

Significant rainfall, strong winds, strong wind gusts and abnormally high and low temperatures for this day are given below. Descriptions of significant weather events are added here when time permits and reliable information is available. This is sometimes well after the event!

A westerly wind surge interacted with the monsoon trough over the southern Arafura Sea on the 11th, leading to the development of a tropical low north of Goulburn Island. The low deepened to 1004 hPa under the influence of an upper trough over Western Australia, before moving over the Tiwi Islands on the 13th. Land interaction prevented further development as the low moved southwest into the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf on the 14th, then further inland into the Kimberley region.

The low progressively deepened to 997 hPa on the 19th, as it drifted slowly southeast into the Victoria River District. Deep moist inflow and low-level convergence contributed to persistent convective activity and heavy rainfall totals near the low and over the western Top End during this period.

On the 19th the low started to move more rapidly southeast as another upper trough developed over Western Australia. The low then weakened as it moved steadily across the Alice Springs Region and into northeastern South Australia early on the 21st.

On the 19th a severe thunderstorm tracked through eastern Ipswich, Bundamba, and the western Greater Brisbane area. Hail to 2 cm, very heavy rainfall, and wind damage to roofing was reported. Trees and power lines were also brought down. Bundamba Alert rainfall station recorded 132 mm in 1 hour.
