Cold, wet and windy start to Easter in coastal NSW

The chart for 500hPa (18,000 feet) at 10am Saturday shows the deep, persistent low in the Tasman Sea. COLA

It was a cool showery start to Easter for campers and beach-lovers along the NSW coast. Strong winds and heavy rain in Sydney's north kept emergency services busy, with around 40 calls received mostly to deal with trees that were blown down onto cars and houses. Rainfall totals for the 24 hours to 9am were between 50 and 60mm for many North Shore and Northern Beaches suburbs, with Frenchs Forest topscoring with 62mm.

A strong upper low developed on a trough as it arrived in the central Tasman Sea last Wednesday, bringing the system to a halt and shooting cold southern air up its western flank. The colder, denser air developed an intense high pressure system over Tasmania. Pressure peaked around 1038hPa on Thursday morning, but has remained above 1030 since, and combined with a nearly stationary low of 1000 to 1010hPa in the eastern Tasman has pushed strong southeasterly winds onto the NSW coast.

The long fetch and period of wind from the same direction has produced big swells with maximum wave heights of 6 to 9 metres off Sydney. There have been some sharp, heavy coastal showers in the unstable onshore airstream, and cloud has extended inland to the Slopes.
