Torrential rain on Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island experienced a deluge today as 103mm fell at the Airport between midnight and midday. A Low formed to the west of the island in a slow-moving trough, leading to strong uplift in the warm, moist northerlies over the island ahead of the trough. 31.2mm fell in the 55 minutes from 9am.

Brief heavy rain in southern SA, western TAS

An active cold front enhanced by a narrow upper trough and advancing colder upper air moved northeast over TAS, VIC and southern SA this morning bringing some brief but useful rain. Prefrontal rain gave Mt Read, 26km north of Queenstown on the TAS West Coast, 77mm for the 24 hours to 9am, most falling after midnight. The rainband crossed southeastern SA during the late morning and early afternoon, giving 15 to 25mm to the Mt Lofty Ranges and parts of the Upper Southeast, with a top fall in the day to 9am Thursday of 34mm at Peake, 67km ESE of Murray Bridge. This is the first significant rain in the area since February.
