Hot in western WA and coastal NT

Maximum temperature records for May fell in coastal WA today as warm northeasterlies swinging around a strong High west of Adelaide delivered warm continental air. The two capes in the southwest, Leeuwin and Naturaliste, both set 45-year records with top temperatures of 28.7 and 26.6. North of Perth, Kalbarri just squeezed past its previous record of 36.1 by 0.1°, while Troughton Island in the far north of the Kimberley also set a new high. Many more records would have fallen but for the exceptional heat exactly one year ago. On 1 May 2002, over 20 centres set new records, including Perth metro which comprehensively dismissed a previous May top of 32.4 with a new reading of 34.3. Today's 32.7 is therefore Perth's second-highest May maximum on record.

Warm and fairly strong easterlies across the NT today also produced warm conditions along the coastline around Darwin by smothering the normal sea breeze. Darwin's top of 35.9 just missed the extreme of 36.0 in 61 years of computer records. Interestingly, Darwin's average May maximum is 32.0, showing how even the temperature is. Black Point, on the Coberg Peninsula about 170km NE of Darwin, did set a May record but based only on 12 years data.
