Still warm in SW WA, coastal NT
Wintry blast sweeps TAS

Exceptionally warm May weather continued for the third day in a row across WA's southwest, with temperatures again 8 to 10 above normal. Top recordings for the day were mostly a degree or two cooler than yesterday. Coastal NT temperatures continued to be close to record May levels despite only being 3 or 4° above average. Black Point, which recorded a record high May temperature 2 days ago, broke its admittently short 12-year record again today with a top of 34.0. Black Point is near the tip of the Coberg Peninsula, about 170km NE of Darwin.

A wintry cold front swept across TAS this morning bringing gale to storm force winds, wintry showers with hail, and light highland snowfalls to the state. At Cape Bruny the wind gusted to 132km/h just after 6am, shortly after the passage of the front; Maatsuyker Island and the summit of Mt Wellington also recorded gusts of 126 and 122km/h respectively. Atop Mt Wellington, the temperature dropped from a balmy 5.6 at 3am to -0.9 at midday and just kept going down: -1.9 at 3pm and -3.5 at 9pm. Hail and brief heavy wintry showers were reported from coastal stations, and Liawenee on the Central Plateau had light snow through the day. Light snow continued down to about the 800m level into Sunday, though winds eased rapidly as a strong High began moving in from the west.
