Heat sets new records in SW WA

The May heatwave in WA shows no signs of abating as warm, dry northeasterlies continue to swing around abnormally strong highs anchored over southeastern Australia. Today, Cape Naturaliste west of Bunbury broke its May maximum temperature record for the second time in a week. The previous record of 26.1, in 45 years of computerised observations, was broken on 1 May when the thermometer reached 26.6. Today the maximum recorded was 27.8. Jarrahwood, 30km east of Busselton, also set a new record today with a top of 29.3. Maximum temperatures across southwest coastal areas have been in the mid to high 20s for every day of the past week. The average maximum in the area for this time of year is 19 to 20°. Overnight minima, which returned to closer to normal after peaking on 1 May began to climb yesterday, and today were 4 to 8 above across a large area of the SW WA inland.
