Unusually warm night across southern Australia
Fog blankets Perth

Minimum temperatures were well above normal across large swathes of southern Australia this morning. Most of the southern half of WA, apart from the SW coastal fringe, recorded minima 6 to 8° above normal, and the same conditions prevailed in southwest SA. A second band extending from eastern VIC to central southern QLD recorded minima 4 to 7 above average. The widespread warmth was the result of a long period of northerly winds bringing warmer tropical air south. Last night, widespread middle level cloud over the south of the continent acted as a blanket, reducing night-time cooling by radiation to the sky.

Fog was widespread across the Perth metro area this morning. Light winds, overnight cooling and ground moisture from recent rain conspired to produce the fog which slowed motor traffic but did not close Perth Airport. The fog dissipated by mid morning.
