Wintry blast hits WA
Hot in central southeastern Australia

A fast-moving cold front swept across southern WA this evening, presaging a significant burst of deep southern air to sweep across the continent over the next few days. Strong to gale force winds around the coast and wintry showers followed an earlier front yesterday. ABC News reported that dozens of sub-Antarctic seabirds and turtle hatchlings had been recovered on the coast between Perth and Bunbury, blown hundreds or thousands of kilometres from their natural habitat by the major storm system. Some were found far inland. However, while there were some rainfalls of 10 to 20mm along the southern coastal fringe, peaking at 37.2 at Esperance to 9am Tuesday, the system delivered more puff than substance in a winter that has so far seen below average rainfall across the Southwest.

Strong northwest winds ahead of the WA cold front produced a very warm day for July across SA, western NSW and VIC, the southern NT and SW QLD. Arkaroola, in the northern Flinders Ranges in SA, recorded its warmest July day in 25 years of record with a top of 27.0.
