Frosty morning in most of eastern Australia

Minimum temperatures this morning (above) and variation from normal (below). BoM

Much of the eastern half of the continent south of Townsville to Tennant Creek awoke to frost-level temperatures this morning. Clear skies, light winds, low humidity and a mass of cold air that has pushed right through to the north coast of Australia allowed temperatures to plummet after sundown yesterday. The dryness of the air was a major factor; once air reaches dew point as temperature drops, the rate of cooling slows dramatically as latent heat is released into the air by condensation. Dew points were as low as -22.5 this afternoon at Mt Isa QLD and the Territory Grape Farm 140km north of Alice Springs NT. When the drier air arrived in Darwin yesterday morning, the dew point fell from 17.7C at 4am to 4.6 two hours later.

Grey and pink colours in the top map at right show the area likely to have experienced frost. Grey areas recorded a minimum temperature between zero and 3C in the thermometer screen about a metre above the ground, but with a clear sky and little or no wind there can be an enormous temperature gradient between the screen thermometer and one exposed on the grass -- 3 or 4 degrees is normal, and the difference can be as much as 6 or 7 degrees. The northern boundary of the 3 degree (grey) area on the map corresponds closely with the climatic "frost-free" area of Australia, so many places along this line would average only one frost or less a year.

Bowen, Barcaldine and Baralaba in QLD and Leigh Creek in SA all set new August minimum temperature records. Barcaldine's was the most noteworthy. The town sits on the Tropic of Capricorn, and sub-zero temperatures are very rare events. This morning's reading of -0.3 broke the previous August record of -0.1 in 42 years of observations.
