Further temperature extremes across the continent

Unusually warm conditions for August were again reported from Central Australia today while parts of SA, VIC and TAS shivered. An area from Alice Springs through northwestern SA into central eastern WA recorded overnight minima from 6 to 11 above average, while daytime temperatures in the Centre were up to 10 above. The lingering cold airmass under a High in Bass Strait, however, gave a record cold night to the northwestern Melbourne suburb of Essenden. The old aerodrome site recorded -2.2, its coldest August reading in 36 years, while Scoresby in the city's southeast and Bundoora in the northeast recorded -2.0 and -1.7, all around 8 below average. Persistent cloud cover after a cold night also kept daytime temperatures exceptionally low in central parts of SA. Nonning and Kimba only just topped 11C, while Hawker and Arkaroola in the northern Flinders Ranges scored 12 and 13 respectively.
