Severe storms sweep across SE SA and western VIC
Strong winds, heavy showers precede front in WA

Thunderstorms brought hail, strong wind gusts and brief heavy rain to parts of SA and western VIC today. A line of thunderstorms developed along a cold front as it crossed the southeast coast of SA around midday. There were reports of hail from the Murraylands and Upper Southeast during the afternoon, and of 2cm hail at Coonalpyn, 80km SE of Murray Bridge. The storms intensified as they moved east into VIC during the early evening, with the ABC reporting hail 15cm deep near Goroke, 65km west of Horsham and trees damaged along the Western Highway to the north of the town. The storms died out in the Swan Hill to Bendigo area around midnight.

An active cold front crossed the WA Southwest Coast late afternoon and lay from around Esperance to Carnarvon by midnight. Severe wind gusts, reaching 102km/h at Geraldton Airport, were experienced either side of the front (see gusts below), and heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms brought widespread falls of 15 to 20mm by midnight from the Central West through to the South Coast. The front ushered in a very cold, unstable airstream with coastal temperatures down to 7 or 8C in strong southwesterlies around the Southwest by midnight.
