Warm night in NT, QLD
Widespread rain begins in NSW, VIC

Minimum temperature departure from normal this morning. BoM

Warm, moist tropical air was ducted southeastwards ahead of a vigorous cold front crossing SA and NT overnight, producing an exceptionally warm night for August across much of the NT and QLD. Minimum temperatures were 6C or more above average over most of the Territory and QLD, but were 10 to 15 above in SE NT and central southern QLD. Jervois NT, with a low of 22C, 15 above average, had the distinction of experiencing the warmest night in the country compared to average. Tambo, Injune, Charleville and Longreach in QLD were not far behind with lows between 11 and 14 above the norm.

The moisture interacted with uplift ahead of the advancing cold front to produce a broad band of rain which moved southeastwards across VIC, NSW and the far south of QLD during the day and into Sunday. Widespread thunderstorms developed in NW NSW and SW QLD late last night and intensified in the early hours of this morning as they moved SE. However the first reports of significant rain were for the 3 hours from 6 to 9am, when Bedourie and Birdsville QLD reported 13 and 8mm respectively, and Ivanhoe in SW NSW reported 12mm.

Thunderstorms died out during the morning as the rainband broadened and continued to move SE, reaching Sydney and Melbourne around noon. By mid-evening, it was raining steadily across much of the eastern half of NSW and the eastern two-thirds of VIC, with many locations accumulating 30 to 40mm by midnight. See Sunday's report for more details.
