Storm line brings downpours, large hail to Sydney and Hunter NSW

A 200km line of thunderstorms swept eastwards across the coast from Wollongong to Newcastle mid-afternoon, giving Sydney city twice as much rain in 10 minutes as had been recorded for the whole of September. 11.2mm fell at Observatory Hill between 3.20 and 3.30pm compared to the site's September total of 5.8mm. Local flooding was reported on Horsley Drive Fairfield, Pacific Highway Pymble and in Windsor, while accidents in the rain on the F3 and M5 led to long traffic tailbacks. A severe storm that swept across the lower Hunter Valley between 3 and 4pm gave 3cm hail at Cessnock and Maitland.
