Snow to low levels in TAS
Bushfire burns over 1,000 square km in WA Kimberley

Snow to low levels in TAS

Snow fell nearly to sea level in TAS today as a significant late-season burst of cold air surged across the island in the wake of a cold front late last night. By 9am the snowline was down to around 1,000m, with 5cm on the ground at Lake St Clair. At 3pm observations time it was snowing at Maydena in the upper Derwent Valley, 275m asl, and Strathgordon in the Southwest, 322m. Snow was reported falling at Oyster Cove, about 200m asl 25km south of Hobart and down to around 300m in Hobart's southern suburbs on the flanks of Mt Wellington. Mt Wellington, Mt Read on the West Coast and also Mt Baw Baw in Victoria recorded maxima of only -1 up to 3pm today.

Bushfire burns over 1,000 square km in WA Kimberley

The WA Fire and Emergency Services Authority is preparing to fight a huge blaze that has burnt through around 1,100 square kilometres of pastoral country in the Kimberley west of Fitzroy Crossing during the past week. Record high temperatures in the 40s and strong winds have thwarted attempts by local graziers to contain the fire, which has so far not endangered property or stock.
