Scattered severe storms in NSW, QLD

A trough moving through eastern NSW and central and SE QLD gave further widespread thunderstorms today. Rare hail was reported at Barcaldine in Central Western QLD which averages hail only once every 3 or 4 years. Severe storms occurred along the coastal strip and nearby ranges from Port Macquarie north to around Gympie. Heavy rain was recorded on the NSW North Coast, west and north of Brisbane and on the Gold Coast for the 24 hours to 9am Friday, though most fell in an hour or two late this afternoon or early evening. Rock Valley, 14km WNW of Lismore registered 74.8mm (50 falling in 20 minutes) while Lismore City itself had 40.8. In SE QLD, the heaviest falls were around Ipswich. Ripley, 12km to the SE, recorded 55.0mm and Rosewood, 17km to the west, 41mm. On the Gold Coast, the Seaway gauge registered 15.4mm in 36 minutes to 9pm for a 24 hour total of 33mm. Short sharp downpours caused minor flooding and traffic disruption around Gympie, with ABC Radio saying that Chatsworth, NW of the town, received 45mm in 4 minutes and Pie Creek to the west 24mm in the same time.
