Widespread storms eastern NSW/QLD
Front brings copious rain to western TAS

Widespread storms eastern NSW/QLD

A trough moved through central NSW and SW QLD overnight, then slowed during the day allowing a broad area of thunderstorms to develop from the NSW Northern Tablelands to east of Longreach QLD mid-afternoon. These moved eastward during the afternoon and evening, some developing to severe intensity. A short squall line destroyed 60-year old sheds, brought down trees and powerlines and killed two cattle by blowing debris at Alton Downs, 15km west of Rockhampton, while Rockhampton Airport recorded 36mm in the 30 minutes to 6.30pm. The sails of a boat on Shoalwater Bay, 100km N of Rockhampton, were shredded by the wind. On the NSW North Coast, a spectacular supercell thunderstorm developed to the southeast of Lismore, dropping 4cm diameter hail at Woodburn and 3cm hail at Wardell. Some magnificent images of the storm and a detailed analysis are worth seeing at Australian Severe Weather.

Front brings copious rain to western TAS

Moist northwesterlies ahead of an advancing cold front gave Mt Read, behind Zeehan on the TAS West Coast, 83mm in the 24 hours to midnight tonight. The front crossed the island during the late afternoon, ushering in a spell of wintry weather.
