More heat records fall in QLD, NT

For the fourth day in a row, October heat records fell in QLD. Today it was the Central Coast that recorded the hottest temperatures in around 40 years. At Mackay, the airport and Te Kowai Experimental Station, 7km west of the city, broke records (see below for details), as did St Lawrence, 140km farther down the coast. In the Territory, Elliott had it's hottest October day in the computerised data era with a top of 44.0, just 2.0C shy of their hottest temperature for any month. Temperatures in the northern half of the NT were above 40° everywhere except the coastal fringe. Five grass fires broke out in hot, windy conditions around Alice Springs overnight, but were extinguished.

The extended burst of mid-Spring heat is due to the northern trajectory of the low that passed over NSW on Tuesday. This has intensified the westerlies across the north of the continent, dragging hot air east from the normal hotspot for this time of the year in northern WA. Isolated areas of very strong but short lived gales were reported from southern NT and northern SA, with gusts to 98km/h at Marree SA and 91km/h at Wulungurru NT.
