WA heatwave begins

Warm air sliding southwest around a high in the Bight spread farther into SW WA today, raising temperatures there 8 to 12 above average. The source of the heat, around the Kimberley in northern WA, also intensified, giving Derby Aerodrome and Cygnet Bay, 100km NW of Derby, their hottest days for any month in their 16 years of record. Derby reached 44.5°, with most other stations in the western Kimberley recording 44 or above.

Heavy rain in NE NSW storms

Mildly unstable conditions together with a very humid airmass led to heavy rain from some otherwise ordinary thunderstorms on the NSW Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands this afternoon. The University of New England gauge in Armidale recorded 44.6mm between 3 and 6pm, while the Airport about 5km away recorded only 13.8.
