WA heatwave exits stage right

WA heatwave exits stage right

The mass of hot air that has drifted into southern WA on a northeasterly airstream over the past week began to move eastwards today, with the trough along the WA west coast that caused the northeasterlies drawn eastwards by a passing Southern Ocean cold front. As a result, November heat records fell at at least five SE WA locations including Esperance, Ravensthorpe and Salmon Gums, all of which exceeded 42°. Farther east, Hopetoun North and Eyre both recorded around 44.5. Overnight minima across much of the south of the state were 10 to 14° above the November average, with new records for high November minima set at Lake Grace (24.9, previous 24.7 in 39 years of record) and Mount Barker (20.3, 17.8, 32).

In the state's north, relatively cooler, moister conditions have led to thunderstorms, one at Fitzroy Crossing this evening yielding 24mm in under an hour. The run of early season heat in this area also came to an end today. It has been an unusually prolonged period, with 26 of the past 28 days reaching 40 or above at Halls Creek. Storms were also widespread across the NT top End again today.

Lightning starts bushfire near Albany WA

Lightning strikes ignited a bushfire in the Torndirrup National Park on the peninsula south of Albany WA around 1.30am. The fire burnt through about 400 hectares of bushland before being brought under control this evening.
