Drought impact by numbers
Hot in southern SA

Drought impact by numbers
The impact of the drought is underlined by figures released by three agencies yesterday and today.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the country's sheep numbers are at their lowest since 1947, with 98 million head nationally. Queensland was the state hardest hit with flocks dropping to 4.4m. GrainCorp, Australia's leading grain handler, yesterday reported an annual loss of $18.3m, due to the drought cutting grain receivals in NSW and VIC by 83%. The area sewn to wheat in NSW dropped 15% during the past year, while that sewn to sorghum in QLD dropped 27%.

The annual farm survey of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics reported that three-quarters of the nation's farms made a loss in the past year. The average farm lost $46,300 in 2002-03, with dairy farms the worst hit averaging cash income of just $21,100, making an average loss for each farm of $76,600. It was the worst performance for farms since the 1982-83 drought.

Hot in southern SA
Maximum temperatures across much of southern SA were 10 to 13° above average today following a night when departures were typically 8 to 11 above. See hottest below for the details.
