Wind, fires follow heat in SA

Searing northerly winds ahead of a stationary trough over Eyre Peninsula caused two major fires north of Adelaide to blaze out of control this afternoon. The fires, near Lower Light and Mallala, subsequently joined, burning on a 10km front through 1,040ha of grass and cropland before 350 firefighters brought them under control. In addition to stock and crop losses, 3 sheds were destroyed and many homes threatened. Strong, gusty winds and temperatures in the mid-thirties around Adelaide were accompanied by very low humidity -- Coober Pedy in the state's centre, recorded just 3% at 3pm. The wind brought down powerlines at Port Pirie, blacking out over 1,000 homes at breakfast time. High temperatures pushed southeast today, giving Cape Northumberland, the southernmost point in SA, a top of 34.0, 15.2 above average. Nearby Mt Gambier recorded 32.5 (+12.4) and Portland across the border in VIC scored 31.0 (+12.6).
