Storms bring torrential rain to W NSW, NE VIC

A nearly continuous line of thunderstorms (left) lies along a surface trough (right) from near Albury NSW to NW NT early this morning. The Weatherzone Lightning Tracker image was captured just before midnight, and the BoM surface chart is for 5am EDT when the trough had moved about 100km farther east.

Storms bring torrential rain to W NSW, NE VIC
A nearly continuous 3,000km line of storms developed along a surface trough from SE NSW to NW NT yesterday evening, bringing torrential rain to western NSW, northeastern VIC and parts of the Outback overnight. Most local roads in Central Darling Shire around Broken Hill as well as the Silver City Highway between the city and Tibooburra were closed. The violent electrical storms dropped 41mm on White Cliffs, mostly between midnight and 1am, while Wilcannia recorded 17mm, Broken Hill 11 and Birdsville 14. Storms redeveloped in the same area along a second, weaker troughline this afternoon and evening, giving Cobar Met Office 39mm and Hillston 31. Most of the scattered raingauges along this diagonal line through inland Australia have recorded between 10 and 30mm in storms over the past two days.

Severe thunderstorms occurred in northeastern VIC during the afternoon and evening. Hail up to 4cm in diameter was reported at Rutherglen, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, while large hail and flash flooding were reported at Wangaratta.
