Damaging storms in NT

Hot in VIC

Melbournians experienced a near-record hot December night overnight, with the minimum temperature at the Bureau's city site registering 26.4, just 0.2 shy of the December record set in 1999. The reading was 13.6 above normal, while the low of 25.8 at Scoresby in Melbourne's southeast was 14.1 up on the average. Other high overnight minima in VIC included 24.3 at Castlemaine (+13.5) and 22.1 at Ararat (+12.9). Cloud pushing across the state ahead of a cool change today kept temperatures lower in central and western districts, making Gippsland the warmest place on the continent, relative to normal. Lakes Entrance, with a top of 36.5, was 14.7 above average. High temperatures have had an impact on Melbourne's rail services yesterday and today. Over 130 services had to be cancelled when the air conditioning in a quarter of the train sets malfunctioned due to the high temperatures exceeding their design specifications.

Damaging storms in NT

Severe thunderstorms were reported in the Territory's north and south this afternoon. Storm downburst wind gusts caused several thousand dollars of damage to outdoor furniture and boats at Crab Claw Island Resort in Bynoe Harbour, 40km SW of Darwin. Alice Springs radar picked up splitting storm cells and indications of large hail to the west of the town, while a pilot reported a funnel cloud and raised dust near Tempe Downs
