SE TAS bushfire causes evacuation

A bushfire that began in strong, hot NW winds around noon on the Tasman Peninsula burnt through 3,000 hectares of forest and threatened campers at Fortescue Bay this afternoon. About 45 school children and bushwalkers in the Tasman National Park were evacuated mid afternoon as the blaze moved southeast towards the bay.

Storms bring heavy falls in WA, NT, QLD, wind in NSW

Storms have given some isolated very heavy falls today. In the WA Kimberley, Halls Creek recorded 28.8mm in 20 minutes early this afternoon. Strong winds from a storm downburst accompanied by hail and heavy rain demolished a dormitory building, unroofed one house and significantly damaged several others at Balgo, 200km south of Halls Creek. In the NT, Delemere Weapons Range, 200km south of Katherine, recorded 63.6mm between 6 and 7.30pm. In western QLD, 60.2mm fell at Emerald Airport in just over an hour to 8.30pm, 39.4 falling in just 25 minutes while wind gusted to 102km/h. Several sections of power lines were brought down around Emerald, and a number of large trees uprooted. Flash flooding was reported around Peak Downs in Capella Shire. In NSW, strong winds with a mid-afternoon storm downed powerlines and trees at Gateshead and Warners Bay on Lake Macquarie southwest of Newcastle.
