TC Debbie develops rapidly north of NT

Tropical Cyclone Debbie was named at 5am CST today, about 235km north of Elcho Island NT. Debbie intensified rapidly during the day, reaching category 2 status, with wind gusts to 125km/h by 5pm CST, and category 3 (wind gusts to 170km/h) at 12.30am Saturday while moving closer to the coast at about 10km/h. The cyclone originated as a tropical low in the monsoon trough over the eastern Arafura Sea on Tuesday 15 December. It initially moved westwards, then slowed yesterday and turned towards the southwest. Heavy rain showers and thunderstorms began to affect the Top End of the NT this afternoon.
