Ex-TC Debbie gives Katherine NT heaviest February rain in over a century

Ex-TC Debbie, which has been weakening and moving southwest since crossing the NT coast late on the 20th, gave Katherine and some other Top End locations record one-day December rainfall totals to 9 this morning. Katherine's Council gauge recorded 228mm, the heaviest December total in 114 years of record. The previous record was 221.2mm. Other new records are given below. Tindal RAAF Base recorded an even higher 24 hour total of 284.4mm. The heaviest rain fell during the middle of the day yesterday as the Low passed Katherine. Tindal recorded 52, 73, 112 and 28mm in successive 3-hourly periods between 9am and 9pm.

Widespread flooding was reported from catchments throughout the Top End, with reports of up to 300 to 400mm of rain in the past four days. The Stuart Highway was cut at the Cullen River for a short period, while the Central Arnhem Road was cut at Waterhouse River from 22 to 24 December. The Waterhouse at Beswick began rising from near base-flow level early on 21 December, peaking at the moderate flood level of about 8.2m early yesterday morning. Dorisvale Crossing on the Daly River rose from 3m on 21 December to peak just above major flood level at 18.05m on 26 December.

The remains of the cyclone moved westwards today, crossing into the WA Kimberley region on Wednesday. Cloud and rain caused some unusually low daytime temperatures in the area, Wave Hill recording its lowest December maximum temperature in 29 years with a reading of 26.2.
