Hot and dry in the south, wet in the north

Maximum temperature departures from normal today. BoM

Idyllic summer holiday weather continued over much of the southern two-thirds of the continent today, with clear skies and well above average temperatures. Apart from a large area of central Australia around Alice Springs, there has been no rain or thunderstorms for a week thanks to a massive upper ridge of high pressure over the continent. Today's hottest areas relative to normal were southern VIC and TAS, where maxima were generally 10 to 13 above normal. This followed a warm night in central and western parts of SA where minima were 8 to 13 up on average.

The northern third of the continent, however, is experiencing the lead-up to a monsonal burst, with heavy showers and thunderstorms bringing general falls of 50 to over 100mm to the QLD North and Central Coasts, and widespread falls of 10 to 50mm through the northern halves of QLD and the NT. The heaviest falls have been around Cairns QLD, with Walkamin, 45km SW of the city, receiving a December record 163.2mm in the 24 hours to 9am. Its previous December record in 39 years was only 84.6mm. Cooktown Airport recorded 51.2mm in one hour, between 9 and 10am. Other heavy falls are listed below. Storms spread west into the WA North Kimberley this afternoon.
