Heavy monsoonal rain in WA Kimberley, NT Top End

A monsoonal trough lying across the base of the NT Top End from a developing low over the WA Kimberley continues to give heavy showers and thunderstorms. The heaviest downpours are occurring overnight. There were many 24 hour totals to 9am of 50 to 100mm in both areas, with a repeat performance in the 24 hours to 9am on 1 January 2004. Heavy downpours are listed below, but some standout totals were 39.8mm in 47 minutes at Kununurra WA, 13.2mm in 6 minutes at Derby Aero WA and 43.2mm in 1 hour at Tindal RAAF NT. Point Fawcett, on the western tip of Bathurst Island north of Darwin, recorded 117mm over 9 hours to midday.
