WA: Fire blazes in Kimberley

A bushfire which began yesterday in the Mirima National Park, just east of Kununurra, had burnt through 1,500 hectares by this morning and was threatening the town. Burning in nearly inaccessible country, it was being fought by one fixed-wing water-bomber and a helicopter concentrating on the western flank to keep it away from the township. It was extinguished without causing damage to property by 7 July.

Newsbits
Eastern AUS: Warm days and nights
QLD: Heavy rain south of Cairns

As the temperature anomaly maps at right show, warm air covers much of the eastern half of the continent with both minimum and maximum temperatures 4C or more above average over a wide area. There have been pockets of even warmer temperatures, with Alyangula and McArthur River Mine in the NT, Weipa, Kowanyama and Brian Pastures in QLD, Tidbinbilla ACT and Moogara TAS all coming within a degree of their July record maxima today.

Heavy overnight showers from moist onshore winds brought substantial rainfall totals to the Tully area south of Cairns. Tully registered 101.4mm, its wettest July day in over 80 years of records, and Topaz, in the mountains behind, 91.0. See Wettest for other high totals.
