East Gippsland's high country had its whitest days for decades last weekend. The weekend of heavy snow put high country residents (and visitors) in a major flurry. The football at Omeo had to be called off because of the 10 centimetres of snow on the footy ground. There was also snow on the road between Benambra and Omeo, which made it a no go for the Benambra Football Club. Billies Ski-Hire at Omeo shipped a four-wheel-drive load of snow chains to the Gap between Omeo and Swifts Creek so skiers could get through the snow. Owner Billie said it was the first time farmers had come to the shop to hire chains. They needed the chains so they could get their four-wheel-drives onto their paddocks to feed their sheep. Howard Reddish at the Mt Markey Winery at Cassilis reported a blackout caused by the snow as well. Apparently the snow was weighing down the power lines so much that they shorted out to the farm fence! The weekend of heavy snow put high country residents (and visitors) in a major flurry. The football at Omeo had to be called off because of the 10 centimetres of snow on the footy ground. There was also snow on the road between Benambra and Omeo, which made it a no go for the Benambra Football Club.
