NSW: Front brings gales to the Central West and SE

The cold front that generated wild weather across VIC and southern NSW yesterday passed across eastern NSW and out into the Tasman this morning. Thunderstorms continued along the line of the front into the early hours of this morning, but soon died out, leaving wind the main element associated with the front.

High winds accompanied storms in the Grenfell area late yesterday evening and early this morning. Damage to trees and light structures was reported across Weddin Shire, while at Bumbaldry, halfway between Grenfell and Cowra, trees blocked the main highway and one farmer reported giant ironbarks brought down, one killing a prize cow. In Sydney, the sudden onset of gale force winds around 8am caused cancellation of the Canoe Slalom World Championships when conditions at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium became impossible.

Details of high winds are given in Highest gusts and High AWS wind reports below, but the top gusts were 137km/h at Thredbo Top Station, 102 at Murrurundi Gap in the Upper Hunter and 93 at Mt Boyce in the Upper Blue Mountains.

NEWSBITS

Strong cool southwesterly winds were reported in VIC, TAS and through Bass Strait in the wake of yesterday's cold front. Top gusts were 107km/h at Hogan Island (50km E of Wilsons Promontory) and 102km/h atop Mt Wellington TAS and at Falls Creek VIC.

Another warm night was experienced in an arc from NT through central QLD to northern NSW with minimum temperatures 10 to 14 above normal. Trepell Airport and Urandangie in western QLD reported minima around 27C.
