Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

WA, SA, VIC: Hot weather moves east. High early-season temperatures that have baked WA for the past 4 days moved into the north of the state and eastwards into SA and western VIC today. Port Hedland Airport on the WA northwest coast recorded an overnight low of 28.3, 2.0 above its previous record hot night in 62 years of observations. Mandora, 250km east of Port Hedland along the coast was the hottest place in the nation today with a top of 45.6. The charts below show that, as the trough that's ducting the hot air southwards moved to the east, high temperatures moved into SA and western VIC with normally cool areas closer to the coast recording daytime highs up to 14 above average (see hottest).

QLD, NSW, VIC: Stormy weather continues in eastern states. The high pressure system east of TAS continues to drag warm, moist air southwards from QLD into NSW and VIC while temperatures aloft are still in cooler spring mode resulting in strong temperature variations through the atmosphere. The radiosonde weather balloon released at Wagga this morning, for example, reported a temperature of 24C at the surface, but a temperature of zero just 3km up at the 700hPa pressure level. Variations like this produce widespread instability, and much of eastern Australia has seen thunderstorms and heavy showers over the past few days and again today. Some of these manage to drift over the Bureau's raingauges and the results are listed in the downpours section below. Today, for example, Longreach Aero QLD recorded 16mm between 3 and 6pm, 4mm of which fell in just 6 minutes. Condobolin AP NSW recorded 12mm in the hour to 11pm and Omeo VIC 20.0mm in the hour to 6.30pm. Essendon Airport, Melbourne, registered 1.4mm in just 1 minute in a short, sharp shower, equivalent to an hourly rate of 84mm/hour. The downpours section, and the high AWS wind reports section beside it, are updated in real time through the day in the current day's Daily Weather Summary and are worth watching to pick areas of severe weather.
