VIC: Water restrictions eased after good winter rainfall. After a long dry period, rainfall across VIC was generally average to above average during August and September though below average in western and central districts during October. As a result, the biggest easing to water restrictions in three years has been announced, marking a gradual easing from the lowest point of the drought in 2006. 59 towns are on Stage 1 water restrictions compared with 126 a year ago, while only 19 are on Stage 4 restrictions compared with 97 a year ago. Thunderstorms have helped give Melbourne's water storages their largest monthly increase in 17 years, with capacity increasing from 32.9 to 37.9%.

SA, NSW, VIC: Heatwave conditions continue. High temperatures continued today in southern SA, southern NSW and northern VIC with a broad area of maximum temperatures 10C above average and minimum temperatures 6 above. The highest daytime temperatures relative to average were in the Murray Valley in VIC, with Kyabram, Yarrawonga, Tatura, Shepparton and Echuca all recording top temperatures 12 to 13 above the November norm. Four places in W and SW NSW reached into the 40s - Pooncarie 42.0, Ivanhoe 41.2, Menindee 40.4 and Hay 40.0 while in Broken Hill, the temperature didn't drop below 26.0 overnight. In SA, Tarcoola was the hottest spot with 42.4, while in VIC Mildura topped the list with 39.3. For most places in the three states it was the warmest it's been since last February.

International Events

UK: Wind, rain, flooding and landslips in south Wales. Heavy rain has caused flooding in Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion in the southern half of Wales with 13 people rescued from inundated homes and stranded vehicles. Mid and West Fire Service crews attended 100 flooding incidents and 80 other weather-related callouts. High wind caused the closure of the Cleddau (Milford Haven) Bridge while a landslip closed the A4061 in Rhondda.
