Thursday 15: BoM Climate Outlook for first quarter of 2017 a tale of two halves

The Bureau of Meteorology's Climate Outlook for January to March 2017 shows a strong chance of much warmer, drier conditions in the east of the mainland, a similar chance of much cooler, wetter conditions in most of WA and an evenly balanced chance of either in the remainder. For TAS, the indications lean slightly towards cooler conditions with higher rainfall. The forecast is influenced by warmer waters off northern Australia which are likely to increase rainfall in the northwest, and a continued negative Southern Annular Mode (SAM) which moves the belt of westerly winds that normally lie under Australia during summer and autumn farther northwards, bringing drier weather to the eastern states.

The BoM Climate Outlook video for the quarter gives a good explanation of the Outlook and includes a summary of winter and spring conditions, forecast climate influences, and the expectations for cyclones, stream flows, bushfires and heatwaves. A second BoM video explains the likely movement of the northwest Monsoon, mentioned in yesterdays news, with some very informative time lapse satellite imagery and animated graphics.

Thursday 15: Wintry blast moves farther south into the USA

Plunging temperatures and heavy snowfalls have given the US mid-west and northeast their first real taste of winter, reports the Guardian. Temperatures were expected down to -16°C in Chicago with windchill temperatures as low as -35 to -40°C farther west in Montana and North Dakota. Heavy snow falling at 3 to 5cm an hour across the Great Lakes closed schools and cancelled about 2,000 flights. Further information and a good feel for what it's like to be there are given in this WeatherNation report while a typically forensic but well-explained technical blog comes from Bob Henson on Weather Underground.
