Saturday 24, 08.40EDT: Typhoon Nock-ten an increasing danger to the Philippines

Typhoon Nock-ten is barrelling west-northwestwards at 20km/h towards the south of the island of Luzon in the Philippines at 05.00EDT this morning. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects it to strengthen during the next 24 hours, with sustained winds of 220km/h and gusts to 270km/h before it starts to encounter the outer parts of Luzon on Christmas Day and surface friction begins to reduce wind speeds. Their map showing the likely track of the Typhoon is here.

JTWC is forecasting that Nock-ten will pass within 20km of the capital of the Philippines, Manilla with its population of 12.8 million, early on Boxing Day with sustained winds around 150km/h gusting to 210km/h. JTWC says the system has "become more symmetrical, and [wrapped] tighter into a sharply-outlined 11-NM [20km] eye" in the past six hours. The symmetrical nature of the system, the favourable environment in which it is operating and the fact that it has intensified rapidly all point to Nock-ten developing further into a dangerous Typhoon. It is tracking westwards along the southern side of a high pressure ridge that extends high into the atmosphere, so JTWC is confident in the forecast direction it will take.

In addition to the wind, heavy rain is expected with the passage of the Typhoon and, in central Luzon, a storm surge as high as 1.4m is anticipated.
