Strong winds across SE Australia as cold front approaches 24Jul00
Departures from normal for top temperatures today
Gusty northwesterly winds covered much of southern SA and NSW, and most of Victoria and Tasmania today as a weakening cold front clipped southern Tasmania this morning and a stronger front approached the region this evening. Gusts to storm force (89 to 117km/h) were reported across all four states, while windy Mt Wellington behind Hobart reported several gusts of hurricane speed (118km/h and above). Details are below. The northwesterlies swept a pool of very warm air that has been hanging around Alice Springs for over a week to the southeast, giving parts of SA, Victoria and Tasmania a taste of spring. Port Arthur had its warmest July day in 20 years at 16.4°, while Colac, west of Geelong in Victoria, recorded its warmest July day in 16 years with the thermometer rising to 17.9°
