Temperatures were well above average in southern Queensland and NE NSW today for the sixth day in a row. Large fires continue to burn on the NSW North Coast. The largest is in the Kalang Valley west of Bellingen where 2,000ha has been burnt out. This fire is expected to join up with several smaller fires in Nambucca Shire. Farther north, hundreds of hectares have been burnt near Bungawalbyn and Coraki, south of Lismore. NEWSBITS: Coonabarabran this morning privided another fine example of extreme temperature inversions, as described in yesterday's AWN. The 6am temperature at the airport, about 6km south of town and on a ridge about 150m higher, was 14°. The measurement in town, on the Castlereagh River flats was just 1°. |
