Australia BoM issues Special Climate Statement on ongoing heatwaves. Thu 24 Jan 2018 The Bureau of Meteorology has issued an updated Special Climate Statement (SCS) bringing its coverage of the prolonged heatwave gripping much of the country up to 20 January. Bureau SCS's are very detailed analyses of major events, usually ones that cover multiple states or territories. As you will know if you follow the records sections in AWN's Daily Weather Summaries, the sequence of heatwaves that began in early December and shows no signs of abating has been unprecedented in many respects. The SCS details these, looks at the heatwaves so far, examines the climatic drivers causing them and provides a comparison with past heatwaves in Australia's history.

Widespread heatwaves during December 2018 and January 2019 is available here (pdf), and a list of all SCSs is here.

Provisional records set or equalled today

Obvious errors have been corrected, however this is realtime data which has not yet been validated. Full validation of official records by the BoM Quality Management System (QMS) is a much more complex process and may take some months. Go here for further information on this records section and how the QMS works. These provisional records are based on data received as at 1428 EST on 25/01/2019.

1 N C I don't believe the 46.3 on 26/11/1993 given as all-time maximum in BoM climate stats. It was the maximum over 48 hours and highest temp on 25 or 26/11/1993 elsewhere in SA was 41.3 at Kyancutta. In any event, 47.9 is now all-time highest.

1 N C BoM gives 37.9 on 28/1/2018 as previous highest for January and all-time, however the BoM figures at left are not suspect and fit well with surrounding readings on those two very hot days. I am going with my previous records. In any event, 41.1 is now all-time highest.
