International New Zealand: Gales and flooding rain hit the North Island Sun 29 Apr 2018: A multi-centred low pressure system just west of NZ's North Island swung a mass of unstable moist air into the eastern and central North Island from late Saturday into Sunday, producing some record rain and accompanied by gale-force wind gusts. NZ is just visible as a green outline under the boiling mass of cloud in this NIWA/Himarari animation.

Rotorua had its wettest hour since records began 54 years ago when 51.8mm fell between 1000 and 1100 today, with a total of 167.8mm between 0400 Saturday and 1800 today giving the city nearly 1½ times its April monthly average in 38 hours. A state of emergency was declared to allow evacuations to proceed in the Ngongotaha area in Rotorua's north. In Auckland, galeforce winds coming from the opposite direction to the devastating 10 April storm brought down power lines and weakened trees, cutting power to 2,000 residences and leading to at least 50 emergency callouts.
