QLD: Tropical Cyclone Monica crosses York Peninsula

Category 3 Tropical Cyclone Monica crossed the QLD coast just south of Lockhart River early this afternoon, and diminished to a category 2 before passing into the Gulf of Carpentaria about 10am Thursday 20 April. Peak wind gusts recorded were 109km/h at 3pm at Lockhart River and 93km/h at 7.43pm inland at Coen. The heaviest rain occurred well south of the cyclone the strong onshore flow in the area from Cairns to the Daintree. Copperlode Dam, 12km SW of Cairns, recorded 340mm in the 24 hours to 9am Thursday; other heavy totals are here.
