AUS: Record cold again in WA, NT, QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS

Today was SA's turn to miss out on a minimum temperature record in what has become a nationwide cold spell, lasting so far for 12 days counting from the fall of the first record in Windy Harbour WA on 20 May. Sixteen records fell today, half of them breaking extremes set earlier in this cold spell. Full details are below. Today's significant events:

  • WA: Wyndham shaved nearly a degree of the record it set yesterday, giving it two consecutive coldest nights on record in 39 years.
  • NT: Daly Waters' low of 5.4 was its coldest May morning in 37 years.
  • QLD: Amberley, 5km SW of Ipswich, broke both the minimum air and grass temperatures it set on 24 May with readings of -3.1 and -7.5. Amberley's climatic history goes back 65 years for air minima and 40 for grass minima. Brisbane Airport's low of 3.0 also broke the record set on the 24th, and is the airport's lowest reading in 61 years at two separate but fairly close sites. Stanthorpe and Gatton also broke 40+ year records, Stanthorpe registering the state's lowest temperature of -7.0, which is also the lowest temperature ever recorded in QLD in May.
  • NSW: Records fell in the northwest at Brewarrina, Collarenebri and Coonamble, all with around 40-year histories.

SA: Squally storms accompany low

A low passing close to the south of SA thrust an active cold front across Eyre Peninsula and into the South East this afternoon bringing some sharp temperature drops, isolated thunderstorms and several waves of heavy rain across the Adelaide region. At Wudinna in central northern Eyre Peninsula, the front dropped the temperature from 13.9 to 7.1 in 3 minutes between 2.58 and 3.01pm, accompanied by a wind gust of 80km/h. Around 10 to 20mm of rain fell across the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas, Kangaroo Island, and Adelaide Plains and Hills in the 24 hours to 9am Thursday, with the highest fall 39.8 at Wakefield River, 30km S of Clare.
