Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

SA: Storms cause fires, blackouts. Overnight thunderstorms caused blackouts and sparked several small bushfires around Adelaide. Fires were reported from the southern Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and Murray regions, but were quickly controlled. Emergency services responded to 20 callouts, mostly to clear debris from streets, but also to secure the roof of a house in Clovelly Park. Downed trees and lightning cut power to some suburbs, including Clarence Gardens, Myrtle Bank, Fullarton, Waterloo Corner, Lonsdale, Black Forest, Daw Park and Novar Gardens.

QLD: Showers and storms bring heavy falls to FNQ. The Gulf and northern tropical coastal regions of Far North Queensland received some large rainfall totals today as a small low south of the Gulf of Carpentaria brought converging winds and instability. Georgetown Airport in the Gulf Country registered 101.6mm in 2 hours to 1am. Farther east, Babinda PO recorded 121mm in the 24 hours to 9am. (see wettest and downpours for more reports).

NSW: Patchy heavy rain and hail in afternoon storms. Yesterday's thunderstorms lingered in central eastern NSW throughout the morning and were only just dying out when widespread storms developed across all but the NE quarter of the state early this afternoon. Although the storms were slow-moving, falls were generally light, but Shooters Hill Alert, south of Oberon, recorded 45mm and Big Hill Alert, NE of Goulburn, registered 31mm, both in the 2 hours to 5pm. Police reported that hail on the Great Western Highway near Yetholme was causing traffic disabilities, and there was an unconfirmed report of marble-sized hail at Jindabyne.
