TAS, VIC: Winter returns with a vengeance

The cold front visible on the 10am surface chart below sweeping across TAS and VIC heralded a cold southern airmass that would be exceptional even in mid-winter. Temperatures fell rapidly during the afternoon, with 3pm reports showing snow at all highland stations, settling snow at Strathgordon in the South West (322m asl) and snow showers at Geeveston in the southeast (55m asl). The temperature at Maatsuyker Island off the south coast dipped to 2.7 at 5.30pm, while at 9pm Mt Wellington summit reported -5.7, Tasman Island 2.8 and Hobart City 3.4, all with fresh to strong winds and showers of hail. Conditions in Bass Strait were atrocious, with storm-force winds accompanying the cold. Wilsons Promontory recorded a gust of 135km/h, Hogan Island 124km/h and Cape Grim 115km/h, all in the early evening. Strong winds were also widespread away from the coasts in TAS and VIC; see below for details. The cold intensified during the night, spreading snow to low levels: see Saturday's report when available.

WA: Heavy thunderstorms continue in the Kimberley

Pre-wet season thunderstorms continue to drop some heavy falls in the Kimberley. Sturt Creek, 115km SSE of Halls Creek in the East Kimberley, recorded 83.0mm to 9am, more than doubling its previous October record of 40.6mm in an 89-year history. Fitzroy Crossing recorded 46mm in 6 hours to 3am.
