Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

WA: Hot before welcome rain. A pair of cold fronts crossed southern WA today, ushering in useful rain and a field of particularly cold air but preceded by unusually warm conditions. Overnight minima were well above normal across parts of the southwestern quarter of the state; Swanbourne's overnight low of 15.6 was its warmest for July in 11 years, while Jandakot (13.4), Lancelin (16.0) and Pingelly (11.6) were all around 6 above average. During the day, the warm conditions spread nearly statewide as well as across the western half of SA with maxima up to 8 above normal (see hottest and maps below). Rain accompanying the fronts began to fall early this morning, with some heavy downpours including several reports of 10mm falling in half an hour. Top fall to 9am was 24.6 at Mundaring, while 15.6mm at Perth Metro was its heaviest one-day total since 18.0mm on 7 February. Light rain moved into central areas during the morning, with some heavier falls along the South Coast, where totals for the 24 hours to 9am Monday included 24.0mm at Northcliffe and 18.6 at Albany.

NSW, QLD: Cold morning on the Northern Tablelands and Darling Downs. Overnight lows were up to 10 below average across much of NE NSW and SE QLD. The minimum temperature map shows an unusually large area recorded lows of -3 or below, with Glen Innes Airport (-10.7) and the Armidale city site (-10.1) recording double-digit negatives which are rare for the area. In QLD, Stanthorpe recorded the state's lowest minimum of -8.0.

TAS, VIC: Continuing windy. High winds freshened again across the southeast of the continent in advance of the latest cold front. See wind data below.
