ANT: Blizzard sets wind record at Davis

Australia's Antarctic base at Davis experienced an extraordinary blizzard for October today. The average wind speed for the 24 hours to 9am local time was 101.1km/h, 17.4km/h higher than for any October day in the 46 years that records have been kept at the station. The average for the next 24 hours, to 9am Friday, was 78.7km/h.

High winds began early this morning EST as an unusually deep Southern Ocean low came close to Davis on the Antarctic coast, 4500km SW of Perth. The barometer hovered below 950hPa most of today, with the lowest reading of 942.9 occurring at 1.07pm. Temperatures during the blizzard were mostly in the low -20s. From 2.30am until 10.30pm, every half-hourly observation reported a wind speed of 100km/h or more, with a peak 10-minute average wind of 158km/h at 5.55am. The top gust of 187km/h at 6.43am will also be an October record if confirmed, the previous record being 178km/h on 19 October 1960. The highest average daily wind speed (24-hours to 9am) recorded for any month at Davis was 103.7km/h on 30 July 1998, and the highest wind gust 206km/h on 18 April 1972.

WA: Thunderstorms bring more heavy rain

The focus of heavy storm rainfall moved east in WA yesterday with the heaviest 24 hour totals to 9am in the Kimberley and Goldfields. Leinster's fall of 25.8 was its heaviest October total in its 12 years of record.
