NT, QLD: Heavy monsoon rain continues

A low in the monsoon trough moved into Arnhem Land overnight, extending moist northeasterly winds from the southern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria onto the Roper coast in the Territory's northeast. Wollogorang, just west of the NT/QLD border and 65km inland, recorded 200.6mm in the 24 hours to 9am, its heaviest March one-day total in 31 years of record. A further 192.7 fell to 9am Sunday, and the station's 5-day total to 9am Monday 20 March was 688.2mm (average for the month of March is 146.8mm). Bing Bong Port, on the coast north of Wollogorang, recorded 220.0mm to 9 this morning, its heaviest one day fall in 10 years of records. Heavy cloud from the monsoon low kept daytime temperatures exceptionally low in the area, with Wollogorang, Elliott, Daly Waters, Larrimah and McArthur River Mine all reporting maxima in the mid 20s, some 8 to 9.5C below the norm.
